What Is Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly?

Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly is part of the organization’s “commitment to preserving the natural world.” It utilizes established product certification, testing, and inspection schemes, along with schemes developed directly by Amazon. The scheme owners range from governmental agencies to non-profits to individual laboratories and the schemes utilize ISO/CASCO standards, such as ISO/IEC 17065, ISO/IEC 17025, and ISO/IEC 17020. These conformity assessment standards represent product certification, testing, and inspection requirements for the related conformity assessment activities.

How Does ANAB Accreditation Support Climate Pledge Friendly?

ANAB supports Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly by accrediting conformity assessment bodies for numerous schemes and programs included in the Pledge, such as:

EPA WaterSense

  • EPA WaterSense is an ISO/IEC 17065-related product certification program sponsored by the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). The program is intended to protect the US water supply by promoting water efficiency and enhancing the market for water-efficient products, programs and practices. It is designed to promote water-efficient landscape irrigation practices and to bring WaterSense products to the marketplace to make is easy to purchase high-performing, water-efficient products. Products certified under the program include showerheads, sprinkler controllers, faucet times, and more.

Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT)

  • EPEAT is an ISO/IEC 17020-related inspection program sponsored by the Global Electronics Council that provides environmental product ratings for consumers to easily select high-performance electronics that meet information technology (IT) and sustainability goals. Products are registered based on their ability to meet EPEAT criteria developed to address the full lifecycle of the product. Organizations participating in the program have their environmental performance claims verified by accredited conformity assessment bodies, or inspection bodies. Products in this program include electronics, such as printers, iPads and laptops. 

EPA Energy Star

  • The EPA Energy Star program utilizes two conformity assessment standards, ISO/IEC 17065 and ISO/IEC 17025 for product certification and testing, respectively. ANAB accredits numerous product certification bodies and laboratories under the EPA Energy Star program, which aims to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants encompassing products in more than 60 categories used by millions of Americans. Consumer products include air purifiers and dehumidifiers, ventilation fans and computer monitors.

BIFMA Level Furniture Sustainability Standard

  • BIFMA is an ISO/IEC 17065-related product certification program sponsored by the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association. It is based on the ANSI/BIFMA e2 Furniture Sustainability Standard. The program considers environmental impacts, health, and wellness of end users and social responsibility of furniture manufacturers participating in the program. Certified products under the program are included in a public product registry. Products include ergonomic work chairs, sit stand workstations, and monitor arms and are certified to one of three performance tiers, Level 1, 2 and 3. ANAB accredits numerous product certification bodies under this program.

ANAB is a recognized accreditation body for these schemes and programs, as well as many others that contribute to the overall commitment to good environmental, social, ethical and food safety practices. Most of the programs are voluntary utilizing conformity assessment standards intended to ensure organizations are operating in sustainable ways, as well as producing sustainable products verified through accreditation and certification.
