Changes to ANSI/NEMA MW 1000-2023, Magnet Wire

Numerous inductors with ferrite cores and wrapped in copper ANSI/NEMA MW 1000 magnetic wire on chalkboard surface

In a precise and convenient form, ANSI/NEMA MW 1000-2023: Magnet Wire, like its predecessors, presents all existing NEMA standards for magnet wire, including those for round, rectangular, and square film-insulated and/or fibrous covered copper and aluminum magnet wire for use in electrical apparatus.

Furthermore, ANSI/NEMA MW 1000-2023 includes the definitions, type designations, dimensions, constructions, performance, and test methods for magnet wire generally used in the winding of coils for electrical apparatus. All of these considerations must be thoroughly comprehendible by manufacturers of magnet wire and products containing the material. Such products include transformers, speakers and headphones, motors, potentiometers, MRI machines, and any other systems that involve an electromagnet.

ANSI/NEMA MW 1000-2023 Revision

Due to the importance of magnet wire as a component of so many products, the ANSI/NEMA MW 1000 standard is regularly revised, with the ANSI/NEMA MW 1000-2023 edition superseding the 2020 version. While this new revision doesn’t affect compliance with products manufactured during a time when a previous version of the standard was in effect, it is applicable for the fabrication of all current products containing magnet wire.

Below are the major highlights of changes made to the current version of the magnet wire American National Standard

Changes to Part 1 – General

  • Revision to the scope of to advise that the standard does not address quality assurance procedures or any other aspects of quality assurance

Changes to Part 2 – Specifications

  • Modification to the titles and insulation descriptions of all specifications in MW 1000, Part 2 for polyester-based film insulated magnet wire
  • Designation of certain magnet wire specifications as obsolete

Changes to Part 3 – Test Methods

  • Revisions to the Refrigerant Extraction and Dielectric Breakdown After Refrigerant Conditioning procedures to:
  • Revisions to Table 36 for Dielectric Breakdown of rectangular and square magnet wire

Changes to Annex C

  • Cross-reference of NEMA and IEC specifications to reflect the current standardization activity of both organizations
