ANSI Mission

For the past century, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has striven “To enhance the global competitiveness of U.S. business and the U.S. quality of life by promoting and facilitating voluntary consensus standards and conformity assessment systems, and safeguarding their integrity.” Today, in fulfillment of this mission, ANSI membership represents the interests of more than 125,000 companies and 3.5 million professionals.

ANSI Membership

ANSI has numerous types of members: Company, Government, Organizational, Educational, International, and Individual. These can be maintained at two different levels—Full Membership and Basic Membership. Full members are given the most access to the benefits that membership can provide.

If you’re interested in becoming an ANSI Member, complete the ANSI Membership Application. Further information, such as the cost of dues, for ANSI Membership is available here, or you can email membership@ansi.org or call 212-642-8922.

Why Become an ANSI Member?

In addition to being part of an organization that has long helped to assure professional safety and competitiveness, ANSI members benefit by working with emerging issues and best practices in their industry. The decisions made through the standardization process will affect their businesses no matter what, so being a part of the process can give members both representation in the proceedings and access to the best knowledge in their industry, along with meaningful networking opportunities.

This participation is not limited to standardization in the United States. As the US member to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and, via the U.S. National Committee (USNC), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), ANSI serves a pivotal role in international standardization, influencing industry in the participating countries worldwide.

Discounts on ISO and Other Standards

If you’re interested in membership, odds are that you are a standards user. Luckily, a key perk of membership is discounts on select standards documents from various standards organizations on the ANSI Webstore.

Discounts on ISO Standards as an ANSI Member Price

ANSI members are eligible to receive up to a 20% discount on thousands of standards. Specifically, the ANSI member discount is available for standards published by ISO, IEC, the American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA), ASIS International, the American Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE), the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology (IEST), the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), and the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute (PMMI).

ANSI Membership Savings Program

Joining ANSI comes with other perks that aid an organization’s day-to-day activities. Notably, through ANSI’s savings program, members are eligible for numerous discounts. This includes savings on UPS shipping, savings up to 80% on over 30,000 office supplies and free next-business-day delivery on qualifying orders under $50 from Office Depot, 30% off Lenovo products, and up to 25% off car rentals—through Hertz, Thrifty, and Dollar.

ANSI Company Member Forum (CMF)

ANSI company members also benefit from access to several proceedings. Company members are encouraged to attend the Company Member Forum (CMF)—a discussion venue for ANSI members in a wide range of industries to talk about issues related to national and global standards and conformity assessment developments. Held annually, this event enables participants to find collaboration opportunities with colleagues to identify industry-wide challenges, network among the standardization community, and learn more about data, information, and best practices.

For example, the 2019 CMF focused on China standards reform, standards for services, digital transformation, sustainability and the circular economy, the effect of standards on 5G, and bilateral/multilateral trade agreements and standards.

ANSI Consumer Interest Forum (CIF)

Similarly, ANSI also holds a Consumer Interest Forum (CIF), which strives to represent consumer interests in voluntary consensus standards and conformity assessment activities. Specifically, this event helps to increase standards awareness and participation among consumer groups, construct a dialogue on key issues, develop effective information exchanges among consumer professionals, and provide consumer feedback to the ANSI Federation.

Furthermore, the CIF is the U.S. link to ISO COPOLCO (Consumer Policy Committee of the International Organization for Standardization), so it also provides a forum for discussion relating to international standards related activities.

ANSI Organizational Member Forum (OMF)

Each organizational member can attend the Organizational Member Forum (OMF). For U.S. professional societies, trade associations, standards developers, and academia, this event enables ANSI members to discuss areas of interest and issues relating to their membership while representing their organization’s interests. Additionally, at the OMF, members can advise the Executive Committee or the ANSI Board of Directors on policy, organization, and priorities, and they can recommend potential ANSI board members to the Nominating Committee of the Board of Directors.

ANSI Government Member Forum (GMF)

Government members of ANSI are able to attend the ANSI Government Member Forum (GMF), during which they discuss government standards and conformity assessment issues pertinent to their constituents. Also, much like at the OMF, GMF attendees can advise the Executive Committee or the ANSI Board of Directors on policy, organization, and priorities, and they can recommend potential ANSI board members to the Nominating Committee of the Board of Directors.

Other Benefits of ANSI Membership

In addition to all these perks, ANSI full members receive a 15% tuition rebate upon successful completion of any online course at NYU Tandon School of Engineering (formerly NYU-Poly)—this can lead to substantial savings when pursuing a Master’s Degree.

ANSI members also receive discounts on ANSI-led training and education events, complimentary admission to many World Standards Week events and reciprocal membership benefits with the Society for Standards (SES).
