What Is ISO 16304:2018?

The provision, operation and use of port reception facilities (PRFs) are inherently linked, so this standard document addresses the design of PRFs, and their operation and management.

ISO 16304:2018 is designed to be used by ports and terminals with existing PRFs which aim to refine their systems; it can also be used by new ports and terminals that are developing PRFs.

Scope of ISO 16304:2018

ISO 16304:2018 applies to ports and terminals of every size—from marinas and fishing docks to massive container terminals, roll-on/roll-off terminals, cruise terminals, bulk cargo facilities, oil terminals, and offshore terminals. Inland waterway ports and marinas can also apply the standard’s guidance, as can ports operating under regional reception facility arrangements.

But this scale also produces enormous waste streams: a single cruise ship can generate 50 tons of solid waste and hundreds of thousands of gallons of sewage weekly, while industrial ports can generate over 5,000 tons of solid waste annually.
