Quality is something everyone strives for in all aspects of their lives. Whether you are making a purchasing decision or finding a new job, having the most value in your decisions is important. With so many options to choose from in today’s global marketplace, quality becomes a determinant factor for most, if not all, aspects of life. For organizations, people engagement through ISO 10018:2020 is essential for quality.

Quality Work Culture Through People Engagement

When searching for a job, a workplace with engaging and committed people is important, as having a highly engaged work team increases profitability by 21%. If that isn’t convincing enough, disengaged employees end up costing US companies up to $550 billion a year. Enhancing a workplace environment with quality management can be a great asset to an organization.

Four factors that can contribute to a quality work culture are leadership emphasis, message credibility, peer involvement, and employee ownership of quality issues. The leadership shown by executives and senior staff can be greatly influential and can change the outlook of other staff.

ISO 9001 and a Positive Work Environment

ISO 9001:2015 has guidelines to implement more effective leadership for companies that strive for quality management. ISO 9001:2015 touches on other aspects as well as the factors of message credibility, peer involvement and employee ownership. Impactful leadership strategies can include promoting the use of risk-based thinking, open communication and engaging and supporting people within the company. While quality management for companies can have monetary benefits as talked about before, it can also positively impact the work environment and the well-being of employees.

What is ISO 10018:2020?

ISO 10018:2020: Quality Management – Guidance for People Engagement addresses this want of quality we all seek for our organizations. ISO 10018:2020 states that people engagement is the emotional commitment that people have to the organization and its goals. When people aren’t just working for the paycheck or a promotion, but the actual goals and ambitions of the company, the organization prospers.

Having a workforce that is passionate about the business, shows empathy towards others and is communicative of ideas and questions can have a great positive effect on the company. Productivity, creativity, and engagement are more achievable when quality management is implemented and this can lead to a more profitable and successful organization.

How Can ISO 10018:2020 Be Implemented?

Overall, this standard gives guidelines for companies to help encourage or enhance this engagement for people within an organization of any size, type, or activity. This standard covers the planning and strategy for quality management, as well as specific topics such as leadership, competence, improvement, and more. There are many potential benefits that can be gleaned from ISO 10018:2020 when it is used to its full potential.

Changes to ISO 10018:2020

ISO 10018:2020 revises the 2012 version of the same ISO standard. The main changes expressed by ISO made to the current edition are:

  • “people involvement” has been changed to “people engagement”
  • The different clauses have been linked to those in ISO 9001:2015
  • A smaller section has been dedicated to competence as the majority of that text has been transferred to the revised ISO 10015:2019
