ANSI/ISA 95.00.01-2025: Enterprise Control System Integration

In today’s smart manufacturing landscape, the convergence of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) is no longer optional—it is a competitive necessity. IT/OT convergence brings together enterprise data systems with industrial control systems to streamline operations, enhance real-time decision-making, and boost productivity. This transformation is reinforced by standards like the newly revised ANSI/ISA 95.00.01-2025 (IEC 62264-1 Mod)—Enterprise-Control System Integration – Part 1: Models and Terminology, which bridges the gap between business and manufacturing systems for smarter, more connected operations.

Transforming Manufacturing Through IT/OT Convergence

Transforming manufacturing through IT/OT convergence (also known as IT/OT integration) means integrating information technology (IT) systems with operational technology (OT) systems/ IT systems manage data and business; OT systems control physical industrial processes.

This process integrates IT’s strengths in data processing, storage, and communication with OT’s role in controlling physical industrial processes and equipment, such as SCADA systems, PLCs, and robots. Essentially, IT/OT convergence breaks down silos, improves visibility, enhances security, and drives innovation by enabling data-driven decisions for better productivity, cost savings, and product optimization.

What Are the Key Changes in the 2025 Revision of ANSI/ISA-95.00.01?

The International Society of Automation (ISA) has released the 2025 edition of the ANSI/ISA-95.00.01 (IEC 62264-1 Mod) American National Standard, which is a revision of ISA-95.00.01-2010. The major changes made to the ANSI/ISA 95.00.01 standard from the previous version include:

  • The starting point for the update was IEC 62264-1, Enterprise-control system integration – Part 1: Models and terminology, Edition 2. This was based on the published IEC/ISO version of this standard, IEC 62264.01.
  • Figure 7 has been updated to reflect specific functions in the enterprise, highlight the specific boundary between enterprise and manufacturing and control domains, and remove information flow labels that were inconsistent with subsequent details of the standard.
  • Clause 6.4 and Clause 6.5 were updated to reflect changes to Figure 7.
  • Clauses 5.2.4.2 to 5.2.4.13 were moved to Annex D5 and are informational.

What Is ANSI/ISA 95.00.01-2025 (IEC 62264-1 Mod)?

ANSI/ISA 95.00.01 describes the interface content between manufacturing operations and control (MO&C) functions and other enterprise functions. The interfaces considered are the interfaces between Levels 3 and 4 of the hierarchical model defined by this standard.

ANSI/ISA 95.00.01 aims to increase uniformity and consistency of interface terminology and reduce the risk, cost, and errors associated with implementing these interfaces.

Understanding ANSI/ISA 95.00.01: Simplifying Enterprise and Control System Integration in Manufacturing

This American National Standard can be used to reduce the effort associated with implementing new product offerings. The goal is to have enterprise systems and control systems that inter-operate and easily integrate.

The scope of ANSI/ISA 95.00.01 is limited to the following:

  • A presentation of the scope of the manufacturing operations and control domain
  • A discussion of the manufacturing operation management activities, their functions and interfaces
  • A discussion of the resources involved in manufacturing
  • A discussion of the structure and roles of physical assets of an enterprise involved in manufacturing
  • A listing of the functions associated with the interface between control functions and enterprise functions
  • A description of the information that is shared between control functions and enterprise functions

Why This Revision of ANSI/ISA 95.00.01 Matters

Historically, IT and OT operated in silos, using incompatible languages, architectures, and objectives. This created inefficiencies, integration challenges, and limited visibility across the enterprise. The revised ANSI/ISA 95.00.01 standard directly addresses these issues by reinforcing a common language, shared models, and structured interfaces between enterprise-level systems (ERP, PLM, CRM) and shop-floor systems (MES, SCADA, PLCs). Ultimately, the latest revision of ANSI/ISA-95.00.01 empowers manufacturers to:

  • Reduce integration costs
  • Improve system scalability and flexibility
  • Enhance data visibility across the enterprise
  • Standardize communication across diverse systems and vendors
