Extended versions (EXVs) of International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards provide comprehensive content and the reference document of an IEC standard into one easy-to-use document, making the user experience seamless, easy, and efficient.

What Is The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)?

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide standards developing organization (SDO) comprising national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). Its objective is to encourage international cooperation on all inquiries regarding standardization in the electrical and electronic fields.

What Is an IEC Extended Version (EXV)?

Certain standards are required to be read in tandem with another standard, which is known as a reference document. The extended version (EXV) of an IEC Standard facilitates the user to be able to consult both IEC standards simultaneously in a single, easy-to-use document. Specifically, the IEC EXV provides the user with the following:

  1. Comprehensive content of the IEC Standard
  2. The reference document of the IEC Standard

The reference document has its replacement or additions bolded, highlighted in blue, and/or in red font in the content of the IEC EXV document. The goal of the IEC EXV is to provide an efficient and seamless experience for the user to easily consult the compiled information of the IEC Standard and reference document together. Overall, EXVs provide the user with comprehensive content of the standard.

Which IEC Standards Have Extended Versions?

To better understand how IEC Extended Version (EXV) documents function, here are some examples of IEC standards that include both the international standard and its EXV:

  • IEC 60335-2-16 Ed. 6.0 en:2022 deals with the safety of electric food waste disposers for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V including direct current (DC) supplied appliances and battery-operated appliances. Its EXV, IEC 60335-2-16 Ed. 6.0 en:2022 EXV, includes the content of the references made to IEC 60335-1:2020 and adds a variety of IEC normative references, classifications, and terms and definitions like rated frequency, normal operation, outlet load, supply cord, and basic insulation. It also mentions (in bold) food waste disposers, rated voltage, and battery operated appliances as part of the standard’s scope.
  • IEC 60335-2-40 Ed. 7.0 b:2022 deals with the safety of electric heat pumps, sanitary hot water heat pumps and air conditioners, incorporating motor-compressors as well as hydronic fan coils units, dehumidifiers (with or without motor-compressors), thermoelectric heat pumps and partial units. Its EXV, IEC 60335-2-40 Ed. 7.0 en:2022 EXV, includes the content of the references made to IEC 60335-1:2010+AMD1:2013+AMD2:2016 CSV. It also covers the additional sections protection against access to live parts, power input and current, heating, and leakage current and electric strength at operating temperature.
  • IEC 61558-2-13 Ed. 3.0 b:2022 discusses the safety of auto-transformers for general applications and power supply units incorporating auto-transformers for general applications. Its EXV, IEC 61558-2-13:2022 EXV, includes the content of the references made to IEC 61558-1:2017 and the additions of terms transformers, isolating transformer, safety isolating transformer, associated transformer, auto transformer, portable, and independent transformer. It also includes a section for provisions on protective earthing, screws and connections, and creepage distance, clearances, and distances through insulation.
  • IEC 61558-2-15 Ed. 3.0 b:2022 deals with safety of isolating transformers for medical IT systems for the supply of medical locations. Its EXV, IEC 61558-2-15 Ed. 3.0 en:2022 EXV, includes the content of the references made to IEC 61558-1:2017. It adds information and to the general requirements, classification, no-load output voltage, and marking and other information sections, and it adds the sections protection against electric shock, change of input voltage setting, mechanical strength, and output voltage and output current under load to the standard document.
  • IEC 62271-102 Ed. 2.0 b: 2018 applies to alternating current disconnectors and earthing switches designed for indoor and outdoor installations for nominal voltages above 1,000 V and for service frequencies up to and including 60 Hz. Its EXV, IEC 62271-102 Ed. 2.1 en:2022 EXV, includes the content of the references made to IEC 62271-1:2017+AMD1:2021 CSV and sections normal and special service connection and ratings.
  • IEC 62271-204 Ed. 2.0 b:2022 applies to rigid HV gas insulated transmission lines (GIL) in which the insulation is obtained, at least partly, by an insulating gas or gas mixture other than air at atmospheric pressure, for alternating current of rated voltages above 52 kV, and for service frequencies up to and including 60 Hz. Its EXV, IEC 62271-204 Ed. 2.0 en:2022 EXV, includes the content of the references made to IEC 62271-1:2017+AMD1:2021 CSV and IEC 62271-203:2022. It adds switchgear and controlgear, external insulation, IP code, IK code, degree of protection, visual inspection, overhaul, ambient air temperature, splice, actuator, terminal block, and diagnostic test to the terms and definition section. It also adds extensive information to the sections on ratings, design and construction, and type tests.
  • IEC 62271-209 Ed. 2.0 b:2019 covers the connection assembly of fluid-filled and extruded cables to gas-insulated metal enclosed switchgear (GIS), in single- or three-phase arrangements where the cable terminations are fluid-filled or dry-type and there is a separating insulating barrier between the cable insulation and the gas insulation of the switchgear. Its EXV, IEC 62271-209 Ed. 2.1 en:2022 EXV, includes the content of the references made to IEC 62271-1:2017+AMD1:2021 CSV and IEC 62271-203:2011. It adds definitions for the terms minor failure, defect, external insulation, supervision, control circuit, auxiliary circuit, and transport unit. Sections for gas and vacuum tightness, test voltages, failure report, and influence of the product on the environment are included.
  • IEC 61204-7 Ed. 2.0 b:2016 specifies the safety requirements for switch mode power supply (SMPS) units supplied by source voltages up to 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC providing AC and/or DC output(s), except inverter output(s) establishing AC mains. Its EXV, IEC 61204-7 Ed. 2.0 en:2016 EXV, includes the provisions of the general rules dealt with in IEC 62477-1:2012.
