National Ladder Safety Month puts the spotlight on “Ladder Safety at Work.” Why? Because falls are among the top three most disabling workplace injuries*—and they are costly. More than $17 billion is spent each year on falls at the jobsite*.
More often than not, ladder injuries are caused by people using them incorrectly. Fortunately, there are many ways employers can assist with fall prevention and assure employees stay safe on the job.
Mandate Ladder Safety Training for Employees
The American Ladder Institute (ALI)—the sponsor of National Ladder Safety Month—offers free online video Ladder Safety Training, applicable for ladder use at work. According to the 2018 ALI Ladder Safety Training and Citations Report, video training is among the top two preferred formats of ladder safety training. Also, supervisors can monitor team members’ training progress.
Training participants watch four videos that provide education on the selection, safe use, and care of the most frequently used ladders—stepladders, single and extension ladders, articulated ladders, and mobile ladders. Following each video, participants take a short quiz. By scoring 90 percent or greater on all four exams, individuals earn a ladder safety certificate. Individuals can proudly announce that they’ve earned the certification with a special “I’m Certified” graphic.
Get Recognized for Your Efforts
ALI recognizes organizations that show their commitment to employee safety through its Ladder Safety Ambassador program. Joining the impressive ranks of current Ladder Safety Ambassadors is easy. Ladder Safety Ambassadors are companies, schools, and other organizations who participate in ALI’s Ladder Safety Training program and receive at least 10 passing scores (90 percent or greater)—earning their ladder safety certification and Ladder Safety Ambassador status.
ALI Ladder Safety Ambassadors receive an ALI Safety Ambassador logo and exclusive access to a robust toolkit, helping spread the word about their status and dedication to safety. National Ladder Safety Month is an ideal time to mandate or encourage employees to earn their Ladder Safety Certificate and secure your company’s status as a Ladder Safety Ambassador.
