Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) Panel Performance Requirements

An organic light emitting diode (OLED) functions by a series of thin, light-emitting films composed of hydrocarbon chains, which allow it to produce a notably bright light while using minimal energy. As a variant of conventional LED technology, OLEDs are surely known by many in some capacity, as the light source has been used for the screens of smartphones, televisions, tablets, and monitors, along with other general lighting purposes.

Currently, their incorporation into products is still limited, but the adoption of OLEDs is projected to grow immensely in the near future. In fact, it is estimated that the OLED market will be worth $43.92 billion by 2020. Such growth will allow the technology to drop in cost.

In anticipation of this essential usage, it is imperative that the technology be standardized so it can be incorporated reliably into consumer markets. The new standard IEC 62922 Ed. 1.0 b:2016 – Organic light emitting diode (OLED) panels for general lighting – Performance requirements accomplishes just this, covering a testing method that specifies performance requirements in OLEDs. The OLED panels covered by the standard are for use on “DC supplies up to 120 V or AC supplies up to 50 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz for indoor and similar general lighting purposes.”

IEC 62922 Ed. 1.0 b:2016 testing calls for an OLED panel to be in the horizontal mounting position with the surface emitting the largest fraction of luminous flux directed upwards. This operating position should be maintained throughout the entire test, in which current- and voltage-driven stabilization, when attained, allow for the determination of characteristics of the OLED panel.

These testing procedures are intended to uncover several parameters related to the OLED panel’s performance. These include rated luminous flux (lm), average luminance (cd/m2), photometric code, correlated color temperature (K), operating temperature range (°C), and luminance uniformity (%), among others. The measurements of these qualities should be included on the packaging or product information to convey the OLED panel’s performance and maintain compliance with the standard.
